Hurricane Ian is gaining steam as it heads toward Florida's Gulf Coast.
The storm is expected to pass through the Cayman Islands today and touch western Cuba tonight into early Tuesday morning, emerging into the Gulf of Mexico as a major hurricane.
It's expected to pass the Florida Keys late tomorrow and approach the west coast of Florida on Wednesday.
The National Hurricane Center is forecasting that Ian will top out as a category 4 hurricane off the west coast of Florida with max winds of 140 mph.
Storm conditions will be felt in western Florida starting possibly Tuesday night.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis says citizens on his state's Gulf Coast will feel the impact of Hurricane Ian.
Speaking to reporters, DeSantis said southwest Florida will get affected by the storm's surge even though it's not projected to completely make landfall in that area.
DeSantis added that the Tampa area will most likely deal with heavy storm conditions and a state of emergency has been issued for all of Florida due to the uncertainty of the storm.
He also warned citizens even if they're not in the path of Ian, they'll deal with heavy winds and most likely power outages.
