Tropical Storm Gabrielle formed over the central tropical Atlantic Wednesday.
The storm had maximum sustained winds of near 45 miles per hour while moving north-northwest at 22 miles per hour.
Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center said the storm was not well-organized, but should encounter more favorable conditions for strengthening by this weekend, when it could become a hurricane.
Gabrielle's current track keeps it well away from the United States.
The NHC is also watching another tropical wave with a low chance of development over the next seven days.
Eastern Tropical Atlantic:
A tropical wave located just east and southeast of the Cabo Verde Islands is producing an area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms. Environmental conditions are only marginally conducive, and any development of this system should be slow to occur while it moves westward at 15 to 20 mph across the eastern and central portion of the tropical Atlantic. Regardless of development, this system will likely bring areas of heavy rain across the Cabo Verde Islands later today and Thursday.
The hurricane season runs through November 30.
